Explaining provincial property taxes to Albertans

Our members have continually expressed concern that many residents don’t realize their property tax bills consist of a provincial tax and a municipal tax.

It’s particularly relevant this year because the Government of Alberta has increased its provincial property tax by 14 per cent and municipal governments are required to collect that tax on the municipality’s tax bill.

To help Albertans understand the difference in property taxes, ABmunis has produced a brochure that municipalities can:

  • Post on their official websites
  • Share via social media channels
  • Add to a future utility bill mail-out
  • Print and use as a handout at municipal offices and public events.

We’ve created two versions for municipalities’ use:

  • A version with Alberta Municipalities’ branding
  • An unbranded version that can be easily modified to include municipalities’ logos and branding.

If you'd like to use either version of this brochure or you have any questions, please contact ABmunis' advocacy [at] abmunis.ca (Policy & Advocacy team).

This is the first of several documents we’re developing to help members explain the realities of municipal property taxes and the future of municipal services, based on the challenges that municipal councils face.
