Update from ABmunis’ Municipal Governance Committee

Our Municipal Governance Committee met on May 9 to discuss numerous issues. The committee:

  • Recommended topics for education sessions at ABmunis’ 2025 Convention in November 2025.
  • Discussed potential options for a provincial standard for meeting procedures as Municipal Affairs plans to begin engagements this spring following recent legislative changes in Bill 50.
  • Reviewed ABmunis’ analysis of the Government of Alberta’s Bill 54, Election Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, and how it affects municipalities.
  • Received an update on the committee’s past work to recommend improvements to the rules for recall of municipal elected officials. We will share our position on recall at our Summer Municipal Leaders’ Caucus, so register for your local session now.
  • Received an update on our association's webinars and campaign to inform Albertans about running for council.
  • Received an update on ABmunis' involvement in Municipal Affairs’ review of the assessment models for industrial property.
  • Received our association's latest research findings on municipal finances, which will inform members' public education efforts. These research findings will be featured at next month's Summer Municipal Leaders’ Caucus sessions.
