How does ABmunis prioritize resolutions?

Resolutions are now being accepted for the 2026 Convention and Trade Show in Edmonton! If your municipal council is interested in sponsoring a resolution, visit our Resolutions web page to access all the details, including our 2026 Guide, the Resolution Template, and the Resolutions Policy.

The deadline for submitting resolutions is May 31, 2026.

Have you ever wondered how ABmunis prioritizes resolutions after Convention?

The ABmunis Resolution Policy requires all adopted resolutions be sent to the relevant provincial and/or federal ministry or organization for a response. However, not all resolutions can be considered high priority. This means, that any further advocacy on resolutions is determined by the ABmunis Board based on recommendations from our standing committees who are guided by the Advocacy Prioritization Policy.

The Prioritization Policy provides for a clear process to ensure:

  • Priorities align with ABmunis vision, mission, and core values
  • Focused time and resources on the most important advocacy activities, which serve the interests and needs of ABmunis members
  • A consistent and transparent process for determining ABmunis priorities

ABmunis focuses advocacy efforts on issues that have a significant impact on municipalities throughout Alberta. We first answer a series of questions to determine whether to act on an issue and how to prioritize an issue. Based on the answers to the questions, ABmunis determines the level of engagement that is required, which could result in the following:

  • No engagement meaning that we monitor the issue for significant changes that may impact Members.
  • Low engagement meaning that we inform Members about the issue and opportunities for them to engage directly. Types of engagement may include a Weekly article, informal emails or phone calls at the employee level, and monitoring for future impacts.
  • Medium engagement meaning we contribute to the issue through developing a position and engage in basic advocacy. Typically, advocacy will include letters, formal meetings, presentation to policy committees, webinars, or public communications.
  • High engagement means we lead solutions-based advocacy through the development and deployment of an advocacy strategy.

ABmunis shares the prioritization of resolutions through our resolutions library and resolutions report cards.
