Exceptional response to MSI questionnaire will guide future discussions

Thank you to all our members who responded to AUMA’s recent questionnaire about MSI funding.

In total, we received 143 responses, including 17 cities, 66 towns, 41 villages, 15 summer villages, and 4 specialized municipalities – that is more than half of our entire membership!

The details in your responses provided a clear picture of how you use MSI to fund important infrastructure projects in your communities, including water and wastewater, roads and sidewalks, parks and recreation, protective services, and other key projects that contribute to the quality of life for the citizens of Alberta. It also outlines the importance of MSI to your community and the impacts of what could happen if there isn’t a long-term funding solution in place to address ongoing infrastructure needs.

The information you provided will be very helpful for AUMA as we continue our advocacy with the province for a predictable, reliable, and sustainable funding program that will help you meet your obligations under the modernized Municipal Government Act. As noted when the 2018 Provincial Budget was released, the province has committed to legislate a new funding program by this fall. AUMA has already done considerable work in this regard, and we look forward to working with the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (previously AAMDC) and province on developing this new program.

Watch for more information and updates on our ongoing advocacy work in future editions of the AUMA/AMSC Digest of Announcements.
