Local Election Information and Feedback
Given the scope of changes and in preparation for future engagements on the LAEA, we are asking for your help. Municipal election season is upon us! Leading into the 2025 municipal election, many changes were made to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA). Key changes to the LAEA include the elimination of vote counting equipment, mandatory hand counting, and the creation of a permanent elector register. During the election period, ABmunis is requesting our members to consider how legislative changes impacted your municipality.
The goal is to collect as much information as possible about the current election rules and how they helped, or challenged, municipalities. We are asking ABmunis members to track:
- Costs associated with new election processes (i.e., elimination of vote counting equipment, hand counting, creation and management of the permanent elector register)
- Time to count votes
- Existing or new challenges with election processes
- Any rules or processes that worked well
Further communication will come out in early November outlining how to submit your information and feedback, and timelines for submitting.
If there is feedback that you’d like to share now, please email our advocacy [at] abmunis.ca (Advocacy team).
