Leading into the 2025 municipal election, many changes were made to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).  We know that changes made to the LAEA impacted municipalities and their planning, requiring several key policy and process changes. Although key changes included the elimination of vote counting equipment, mandatory hand counting, and the creation of a permanent elector register, we are aware that there may be broader impacts of Bill 20, and all amendments made prior to the 2025 municipal elections.

ABmunis requested feedback from Returning Officers and others involved in planning the 2025 municipal election on how legislative changes impacted their municipalities and whether there were elements of the LAEA that created challenges during the election. Feedback was collected from November 7, 2025, through January 9, 2026.

ABmunis compiled submissions and created the What We Heard – 2025 Municipal Elections. ABmunis will use the information and data collected to inform future engagements with Municipal Affairs. Individual responses submitted to ABmunis will not be shared directly with Municipal Affairs.

If you have questions about the engagement or wish to submit feedback, please reach out to advocacy [at] abmunis.ca (advocacy[at]abmunis[dot]ca).
