AUMA prepares for Budget Day

Each year, AUMA makes a submission to the province on municipal needs and opportunities that should be addressed in the provincial budget. The submission, which takes the form of a letter addressed to the Premier, includes the primary and secondary asks as approved by the AUMA Board of Directors.

As we heard at convention last fall, the province indicated it intends to carry out some “compassionate belt tightening,” which suggests they will avoid new expenses.  While AUMA included some funding requests in our submission, several of our proposals target ministerial business plans (e.g. updating regulations related to recycling and brownfields), and would have little or no immediate costs.

In addition to our budget submission, AUMA is also offered the opportunity to submit 20 questions regarding the provincial budget to the Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, who then compiles answers to the questions and sends them back to AUMA once the budget is released. These responses help AUMA better understand the potential budget impacts for municipalities.  Following release of the provincial budget AUMA shares the answers to the 20 questions along with our analysis with members to help you determine impacts on your local community.
