Are you ready for resolutions at Convention?

ABmunis members across Alberta have submitted resolutions to be considered during our Convention next week. Elected officials from Regular Member municipalities, who are registered to Convention, will have the opportunity to speak to and vote on each of the resolutions that have been submitted by members.

If you are attending our Convention, here are some tips to help you prepare and participate in the Resolutions Session:

Before Convention

  • Read the 2025 Resolutions Book before you travel to Calgary. It includes each resolution, the purpose of resolutions, and what we do after a resolution is adopted by our members.
  • If you have questions about a resolution issue, ask your administration or contact the municipality that has sponsored the resolution. You will find contact details at the bottom of each resolution.

At Convention

  • Read our background on the Resolutions Voting Process to familiarize yourself with how to speak for or against a resolution, and if necessary, how to propose an amendment.
  • Bring your smartphone, laptop, or other internet-enabled device to the Resolutions Session. You will need it to vote on each resolution.

Respectful Debate

ABmunis’ Convention is a perfect venue to have constructive and respectful debate on political issues. With media in attendance to report on key developments, it’s important to be mindful of how we engage in these discussions. Here are a few tips to help guide your participation:

  • Be an active listener to understand why a resolution issue is important to that council
  • Envision yourself in their shoes
  • If you don’t agree, question the policy, not the person, council, or people of that community.

Each resolution has been brought forward by a council somewhere in Alberta. When you review the resolutions, you may think that some are not relatable to your municipality or don’t align with your personal views. The same happens in our communities, when some residents don’t agree with your council’s decisions. There is nothing wrong with differing opinions, but it’s the way we deal with those differences that matters.

Update to the Resolutions Book

An updated version of the 2025 Resolution Book was published on November 3. It accounts for the withdrawal of resolution C2, Adoption of Alternative Bacterial Water Testing Methods.

We look forward to hosting all delegates in Calgary next week and witnessing some thought-provoking debate on issues that are important to municipal leaders across Alberta.
