Job Description

Reporting to the Foreman, Utilities, the Utility Operator III is responsible for ensuring the safe drinking water supply, reliable fire protection supply, and environmentally sound wastewater collection within the city, while adhering to provincial legislation. As a leader within the crew, the Utility Operator III contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team and promotes a positive, safe, and secure work environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide motivation, guidance, and technical instruction to staff; coordinate tasks, schedules, and contractors; communicate concerns and advice through proper channels.

  • Address challenges effectively in routine and emergency situations while promoting efficient and sustainable practices.

  • Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair water and sewer infrastructure in compliance with codes, policies, and industry standards.

  • Conduct testing, sampling, and system checks; maintain accurate records; report anomalies and ensure compliance.

  • Oversee in-house and contractor work, participate in infrastructure inspections, and assist with project execution.

  • Perform meter services, locates, and disconnections/reconnections while responding to customer concerns in a timely and professional manner.

  • Respond to water breaks, sewer back-ups, and other emergencies, providing guidance and support while being available on a rotating 24/7 on-call basis.

  • Assist with miscellaneous duties, contribute to various projects, and step in as Acting Foreman when required.

Candidates must have a Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent and a valid Class 3 Alberta Operator’s License with Air Brake Certificate. A minimum of 5 years of experience operating, maintaining, and repairing municipal water and sewer systems is required. This position requires the completion of an Alberta Level III Certificate in Water Distribution and an Alberta Level III Certificate in Wastewater Collection. Possession of Safety Training Certificates is required, including Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, Ground Disturbance, First Aid, Flag Person, and WHMIS. The successful candidate will have experience with water meter systems software and SCADA systems, expertise in mobile mapping and GIS applications, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Working knowledge of the City’s infrastructure, heavy-duty equipment, hand-held power tools, and safety manual, along with the ability to effectively use information and communication tools and perform accurate data entry is essential. The incumbent will possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with expertise in communicating in a professional and confident manner. The ability to foster positive relationships and sustain high morale and productivity is essential for completing projects safely and efficiently. This position requires overtime when necessary. Participation in an on-call schedule is required.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. Candidates are required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview.

Rate of Pay:                $37.72 - $41.45 per hour

Hours of Work:           80 hours biweekly
