INSURANCE & RISK ADVISOR
Due to recent growth within our insurance team, we are looking for 2 new Insurance and Risk Advisors (one in Edmonton region and one in Calgary region) to help support our expanding client base.
Reporting to the Director, Insurance Services, the Insurance and Risk Advisor provides specialized expertise and support to municipal and related member organizations across Alberta. The role manages a diverse portfolio of commercial insurance clients, emphasizing proactive risk management, member education, and long-term value creation.
Working in close collaboration with Regional Managers—who lead client relationships and new business development—the Advisor delivers technical guidance, policy servicing, and risk management solutions that ensure members receive consistent, high-quality service.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical knowledge of commercial insurance, excellent advisory and communication skills, and the ability to balance strategic insight with responsive day-to-day service. This consultative position requires professionalism, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering exceptional value to both members and the organization.
Know-How
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary education in business or insurance is an asset
- Minimum 5 years experience in commercial lines insurance at an Account Manager level or higher
- Level 2 Alberta General Insurance Agents License is required
- CIP designation or working towards is required
- CAIB is an asset
- Experience with a wide variety of organizations, including municipalities, non-profit organizations, recreational facilities, governmental organizations, complex and mixed commercial is preferred
Technical and Professional Skills
- In-depth understanding of commercial insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk management practices
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders in a high-volume environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint)
- Commitment to professional development through ongoing education and certification
Communicating and Influencing Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to present complex information clearly to varied audiences
- Strong front-line service approach to work directly with Insurance Services customers
- Skilled in analyzing member needs, identifying coverage gaps, and recommending appropriate solutions
- Collaborative approach, working effectively with Regional Managers and internal teams to support client needs and sales initiatives
- Confident in delivering presentations, leading discussions, and facilitating workshops or webinars
Key Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with Regional Managers to support member relationships, provide technical expertise, and ensure high-quality service delivery
- Regularly attend collaboration meetings with the Insurance Services team at the Edmonton head office
- Educate and consult with member organizations on insurance coverages, risk management, risk transfer, and emerging market trends using current and relevant industry data
- Provide advice and technical guidance to a large and diverse group of municipal and municipally related member organizations on insurance matters and risk exposures
- Support Regional Managers in retaining and growing Alberta Municipalities’ business by assisting with servicing needs and strengthening relationships with key decision-makers and day-to-day client contacts
- Frequent travel to client locations within an assigned region to provide direct support to the Regional Managers and client needs
- Serve as a trusted advisor, addressing member inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring expectations are met through timely and professional communication
- Manage endorsement processing, evidence of insurance requests, and incoming inquiries, ensuring all are handled accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with service standards
- Analyze member-specific risk exposures and assist in determining appropriate coverage and program requirements as members evolve or experience organizational change
- Identify opportunities to offer additional Alberta Municipalities programs, standalone placements, or business service solutions to meet emerging member needs
- Prepare quotations and renewal proposals as required, ensuring all documentation is accurate, comprehensive, and aligned with member expectations
- Assist in preparing underwriting information and submissions for internal, sub-broker, or external market placements
- Coordinate renewal cycles, including the preparation of pre- and post-renewal documentation, presentations, and recommendations to members
- Calculate adjustments and premiums on policies and other insurance documents as needed
- Contribute to member education through presentations, workshops, and webinars that promote understanding of insurance and risk management concepts
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams to support departmental initiatives, process improvements, and service enhancements
- Stay informed on market developments, coverage innovations, and risk trends, sharing relevant insights with colleagues and members
