Position Summary

Reporting to the Health, Safety and Wellness Supervisor, the Health and Safety Technician works collaboratively with organizational leadership and field staff to ensure the effective delivery of the health and safety program to all levels of the organization. This position regularly attends field operations and safety meetings to provide safety program information and updates. 

Primary duties of this position include assisting with the incident investigation process, coordinating and conducting Worksite Inspections and providing coaching to field operations to ensure a safe work environment. This position will create, review and update safety-related documentation, including safe work practices, hazard assessments and employee communication. This position also provides support with identifying and coordinating safety training and assists with safety and departmental initiatives.

This position is based in Edson, Alberta.

Position Responsibilities

Administration

  • Supports site supervision with implementation and ongoing implementation and application of the Yellowhead County Health and Safety Program.
  • Maintains and ensures the accuracy and currency of documents, procedures, policies, etc in the County’s Safety Management Software.
  • Manages and reviews documents including data entry, taking minutes, and filing.
  • Supports ongoing Health and Safety initiatives.
  • Supports safe working environments by maintaining administrative processes.
  • Provides support to the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Maintains a database and tracking system for a variety of health and safety activities, including inspections and follow up, committee training, incident investigations, worksite inspections, etc. to ensure compliance.

Safety Specific

  • Encourages and enhances a positive safety culture through implementation of safety practices, applying concepts, principles and practices involved in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control, prevention, reduction and elimination of hazards, incidents, injuries, and disabilities of employees.
  • Provides coaching and support to leaders and staff.
  • Assists with the preparation of the Safety Audit. As part of the team conducting the audit, participates in the audit activities.
  • Provides input for safety-related communication, creating and sharing safety bulletins, and providing general support for safety-related and department initiatives.
  • Attends departmental health and safety meetings as required.
  • Works with subject matter experts to determine OH&S requirements.
  • Participates in and submits Worksite inspection reports and tracking of remedial actions required.
  • As a team member, conducts Incident Investigations in the workplace and tracking of remedial actions required
  • Maintains statistics and records for Health and Safety.
  • Analyzes site-specific trends and incidents.
  • Prepares reports on a variety of Occupation Health and Saftey matters.
  • Provides site specific orientation to workers and/or visitors new to the job.
  • Ensures First Aid Kits and AED supplies are functional and appropriately stocked.
  • Coordinates safety-related drills as required.
  • Coordinates annual Safety Day
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, and external contacts, interacting in a manner that builds trust, credibility, and rapport. 

Training

  • Participates in training as required.
  • Develops training materials for health and safety training initiatives and education sessions.
  • Schedules training sessions for staff, including arrangements for trainers, registration and any other follow up required.
  • Maintains a tracking system to ensure staff training and certifications are current.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualification, Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements

Education/Skills

  • Post Secondary Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Health and Safety, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years work experience in an administrative role or similar position with preference to work in a health and safety environment.
  • Knowledge of relevant Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulation and code.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, computers and systems.
  • Police Record Check with satisfactory results.
  • Clean Driver’s abstract.
  • Defensive Driving Certificate completed within the last 5 years.

Working Environment

Work Environment

  • Work is conducted mostly in an office environment.
  • Site work and work site visits is required.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

The salary range is $63,506 to $78,747 per year. Yellowhead County offers a competitive benefit package.
