Community Peace Officer Level 1
The Town of Cardston is seeking a qualified and community‑focused Community Peace Officer (CPO) to provide professional municipal enforcement services that promote public safety, compliance, and community well‑being.
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Community Peace Officer delivers education‑based enforcement of municipal bylaws and provincial statutes and works collaboratively with internal departments, the RCMP, and community stakeholders.
The Community Peace Officer is responsible for enforcing municipal bylaws and appointed provincial legislation through patrols, investigations, inspections, and public engagement. The position includes oversight of bylaw enforcement, animal control, Main Street initiatives, departmental staff and contractors, and participation in municipal planning, budgeting, and strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Enforce municipal bylaws and relevant provincial legislation using a fair, education‑first approach
- Conduct patrols, respond to complaints, initiate investigations, and prepare court documentation
- Perform traffic enforcement and inspections in accordance with provincial standards
- Oversee animal control operations, pound management, and Main Street patrol activities
- Supervise staff and contractors, including training, performance, and safety compliance
- Collaborate with the RCMP, Town Council, schools, and community organizations
- Manage security systems, inspections, and departmental assets
- Prepare and manage operating and capital budgets and support strategic and capital planning
Qualifications
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgement, and leadership capabilities
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict‑resolution skills
- Knowledge of municipal enforcement practices, legislation, and court procedures
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a municipal environment
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as operationally required
- Eligibility for appointment under Alberta’s Community Peace Officer program (or ability to obtain)

- Full‑time position (2,080 hours per annum)
