This position reports to the Director of Community Safety.
This position is responsible for enforcing applicable provincial statutes and all municipal bylaws for the Town of Whitecourt. This includes investigating inquiries and public complaints.
The position will work 40 hours per week, which incorporates shift work. Must be prepared to work overtime as required.
Key duties will include:
- Promoting public awareness and education in the community, while exercising sound judgment and knowledge for compliance with provincial statutes and municipal bylaws
- Provides and participates in public education and various safety and crime prevention activities.
- Enforcement of provincial statutes and all municipal bylaws, including issuing warnings, tickets, or appearance notices, clean-up orders and any other required documentation as required.
- Responsible for the enforcement of moving and non-moving violations as per applicable provincial statutes and town bylaws
- Responsible for the preparation of Court Dockets and Crown Briefs on any contested charges, and attendance at Court as required.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Three to five years’ enforcement-related experience, with a high level of interpersonal skills.
- Training as required under the Peace Officer Program.
- Eligible for a Peace Officer Appointment or the ability to obtain.
- Able to pass physical abilities test as per Peace Officer Appointment requirements.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an Enhanced RCMP Security Clearance.
- Preferred formal education related to law enforcement.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions for this position include:
- Frequent lifting and carrying of enforcement equipment, materials, miscellaneous equipment and animals, up to 80 lbs.
- Regular standing, walking, sitting, trunk rotation, forward bending, kneeling, crouching, pushing, and pulling during routine enforcement tasks.
- Working in both indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to all weather conditions and terrains (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.), loud noise, wet or slippery surfaces, and varying temperatures.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and respond to overtime requirements as required.
- Ability to safely operate Town vehicles as part of regular enforcement duties.
