Water issues discussed at Summer MLC sessions

Alberta Municipalities' annual Summer Municipal Leaders’ Caucus (MLC) meetings give us a welcome opportunity to visit different parts of Alberta, meet with members and hear about the issues their communities face.

Over the past month, we held well-attended MLC sessions in Delburne, Diamond Valley, Spruce Grove, St. Paul and Wembley.

We spent several hours at each session discussing ABmunis’ ongoing work on water policies. Water was also identified in the latest Future of Municipal Government discussion paper as a major risk for municipalities. Floods, droughts, storms and contamination pose challenges to Alberta’s water supply.

We shared updates on municipal progress on water conservation, Alberta Water Council work on drought management and source water protection, and asked participants to rank their water issues. Water conservation ranked high in all our discussions, along with issues related to water infrastructure. Water storage was identified at several of our discussions as an additional area to explore.
