Update from the Legislature – November 22, 2023

The Legislature resumed sitting this week, following last week's constituency break. The fall 2023 legislative session is scheduled to conclude by Thursday, December 7.

Minister of Municipal Affairs Ric McIver issued a statement on November 20 declaring that the provincial government “intends to protect and ensure Alberta’s constitutional right to oversee the governance of Alberta’s municipalities.”

This, after Canada's premiers issued a joint statement on November 6 in which they unanimously agreed to "explore legislative frameworks similar to Québec that require provincial authorization before municipalities or public agencies enter into any agreements with the federal government."

Alberta Municipalities is seeking to engage with the provincial government to determine what this might entail.
