Resolutions: Here's what you need to know

On July 29, 2026, we announced the release of the 19 resolutions and one emergent resolution that members will vote on at the 2026 Alberta Municipalities’ (ABmunis) Convention in Edmonton, September 23-25, 2026. The resolutions process is a vital component of our annual convention because it is your municipality's opportunity to give us direction on which issues we invest our time and resources in advocating on your behalf.

Each resolution is brought forward by a member municipality that deems the issue to be important and seeks approval from the membership for ABmunis to act. Each elected official of a Regular Member municipality who is registered for Convention has the right to vote on each resolution.

What can you do to prepare for Convention?

If you are sending one or more delegates to this year's Convention, we highly encourage your council to:

  1. Review the 2026 Resolutions Book together.
  • To support municipalities in reviewing and preparing for resolutions, we have created a template briefing note on the 2026 Resolutions Book that can be downloaded and used in full or in part. The template is available in the Resource section of the Resolutions webpage.
  1. Discuss if your council supports or disagrees with the proposed call to action in each resolution.
  • Each elected delegate may vote at their discretion, and discussing within your council is beneficial to ensure your representative(s) at Convention are fully aware of your council's perspective on each resolution.
  • If there are questions about a resolution issue, ask your CAO or contact the municipality that has sponsored the resolution. You will find contact details at the bottom of each resolution in the Resolutions Book.
  • If you are thinking about making an amendment to the active clause of a resolution (It is therefore resolved that....), we strongly encourage members to discuss them with the moving municipality and notify resolutions [at] abmunis.ca (ABmunis) prior to Convention. Please avoid amendments that deal with grammar, tone, or sentence structure. Amendments should be considered only when it materially changes the intent or direction given to ABmunis.
  1. If a representative of your municipality plans to speak for or against a resolution at Convention, please consider the following tips:
  • The timer starts as soon as you introduce yourself at the microphone and will automatically mute after 90 seconds.
  • Sometimes members run out of time because they use part of their time to extend thanks or make remarks unrelated to the resolution. We encourage you to practice your address, including everything you want to say within 90 seconds.

For a detailed description of the rules of our resolution process, please refer to our Resolutions Policy AP002.

Be ready to vote

Approximately one week prior to Convention, elected officials will receive an email to the email address provided at registration, from Data on the Spot, with your voting credentials. The email will contain a link to a test vote. It is imperative that test votes are completed prior to Convention. Please note, you must have access to that email address while onsite at Convention to be able to vote. If the test vote is sent to the wrong email address, please email our registation [at] abmunis.ca (Registration Team) to update that information.

We look forward to hosting you at the Convention and facilitating a healthy debate of the resolutions that have been put forward by your peers. If you have any questions, please email our resolutions [at] abmunis.ca (Advocacy Team).
