New OIPC tools for municipal privacy and access
The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) has released new resources to support municipalities in implementing legislative changes passed in 2025, including:
- Guidance for Public Bodies in Developing Privacy Management Programs
- Guidance for Public Bodies on Privacy Impact Assessments
Background
The Protection of Privacy Act and Access to Information Act came into force in June 2025. Public bodies, including municipalities, were provided a one year transition period to establish Privacy Management Programs (PMPs).
All municipalities must have their PMPs in place by June 11, 2026.
The Government of Alberta also provides online resources to support public bodies in meeting requirements under the Protection of Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act, including

- Guides on the Protection of Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act
- Several fact sheets, including for PMPs and Privacy Impact Assessments
