Join the party against parties

Alberta Municipalities’ call for the provincial government to refrain from using legislation to introduce political parties at the local level has gained traction with the media and the public. Countless news reports and social media posts have amplified our calls for the Government of Alberta to pursue other solutions to increase transparency in local elections as detailed on our Keep Local Elections Local web page.

Members such as the Towns of Didsbury and Athabasca have passed motions and sent letters to the provincial government emphasizing the importance of keeping local elections non-partisan. We have heard anecdotally that other municipalities have passed similar motions. If your municipality has passed a motion or has corresponded with the provincial government on this topic, please let us know by sending our Policy & Advocacy team an advocacy [at] abmunis.ca (email). We are also interested in hearing how your conversations with local MLAs have gone.

Should you have any questions regarding our key messages or feedback on our advocacy endeavours, please send us an advocacy [at] abmunis.ca (email) or call us toll-free at 310-MUNI.

Together, we have started a meaningful conversation with Albertans about what this legislation means for them. And together, we can advance better ideas that will help Alberta communities thrive.
