Update: Running for Municipal Office initiative

Alberta Municipalities and the Rural Municipalities of Alberta have spent the last four months getting the word out and encouraging community leaders to run for office in this year’s municipal elections on Monday, October 20.

By now, many prospective candidates – community coaches, business leaders, entrepreneurs, volunteers – have heard of our Running for Municipal Office initiative through a variety of channels, including news articles, The Weekly, and municipal websites. The initiative offers webinars, videos, and practical guides that demystify the process and highlight the rewards of serving on council.

We’ve conducted 18 one-hour webinars since our initiative got underway in late April, and we have just two more to go (on September 9 and 16). To date, about 370 people have taken part. If you’re unable to participate in one of the two remaining sessions, you’re in luck – you can watch one of the recorded webinars.

There’s still time to throw your hat in the ring and become a candidate in this year’s municipal elections, but you’ll need to complete the nomination process by Monday, September 22.
