Innisfail leading in clean energy innovation & transition
The Town of Innisfail is partnering with Quebec-based Deep Sky Labs to implement and operate a groundbreaking carbon removal innovation and commercialization centre.
This venture will see Deep Sky Labs invest $50 million to build a 217,000-square foot facility on five acres of land in a new industrial park. This deal came together in a matter of months and is expected to infuse more than $110 million in the Innisfail community over the next 10 years.
The new new facility will be located between Varme's future $200 million waste-to-energy plant and the town’s planned $4 million municipal solar farm.
Numerous factors led to this project being developed in Alberta, including:
- Alberta’s existing and approved regulatory framework, which allows organizations to qualify for the Federal Government’s Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Investment Tax Credit (CCUS ITC) program
- Alberta Carbon Capture Incentive Program (ACCIP) that provides an additional 11.5 per cent rebate on top of the federal program
- An abundance of ‘geological storage’ needed to store carbon dioxide underground.
With this project, among others, in full swing, Innisfail is well-positioned to become a nationally recognized centre for clean energy innovation and transition.
