Do you live near a former residential school?

Have you wondered where Canada’s residential schools were located? CBC News offers an interactive map that highlights the location and time period of each residential school across Canada. According to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, there were 25 schools in Alberta.

Canada’s residential school system removed 150,000 Indigenous children from their homes in order to weaken their ties with Indigenous traditions and culture and to assimilate them into the dominant culture. The school system was created by the Government of Canada and administered by churches, with the last residential school closing in 1996.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission released a report in 2015 that highlighted the abuse and inter-generational impact the school system has had on Indigenous people. To learn more about residential schools, visit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission website or wic [at] auma.ca (contact us).
