Complete your Joint Use and Planning Agreements by June 2023

Amendments to Alberta's Municipal Government Act and Education Act were proclaimed in June 2020 that require municipalities to enter into Joint Use and Planning Agreements (JUPAs) with school boards within their municipal boundaries.

Alberta Municipal Affairs defines a JUPA as “a formal partnership between a municipality and a school board to enable the integrated and long-term planning and use of school sites on municipal reserve (MR), school reserve (SR), and municipal and school reserve (MSR) land”.

Municipal governments have until June 2023 to put these formal partnerships in place.

For more information on JUPAs, check out the provincial government's recently published Implementation Fact Sheet.
