Alberta’s municipal leaders meet for 2026 Spring MLC

More than 450 municipal leaders from across Alberta gathered in Edmonton on March 26 and 27 for the 2026 Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus (MLC), reaffirming the value of coming together to strengthen relationships, share perspectives, and tackle shared challenges facing communities of all sizes.

Representatives from cities, towns, villages, summer villages, counties and M.D.s came together at the Edmonton Convention Centre for two days of in depth discussions on governance, public safety and policing, municipal finance, and the evolving relationship between municipalities and the provincial government.

The agenda featured a mix of expert led sessions and direct engagement with provincial decisionmakers. Delegates heard from Premier Danielle Smith, Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams, and Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi, and participated in dialogue sessions with numerous provincial cabinet ministers that allowed municipal leaders to raise issues affecting their communities and regions.

Key policy discussions focused on municipal governance and accountability, property taxes, public trust in policing, access to information, and councillor responsibilities and liabilities – topics that reflect the complex and evolving political environment in which Alberta’s local governments operate.

Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams announced the Government of Alberta’s intention to move forward with a proposed councillor accountability framework on Day 1 of Spring MLC, positioning it as part of a broader update to the Municipal Government Act. News coverage highlighted that ABmunis and municipal leaders welcomed the opportunity to work closely with the provincial government to figure out how the proposed legislation will be implemented.

In media interviews during and after the event, ABmunis President Dylan Bressey said that municipalities welcomed the introduction of third-party investigations and the return of a standardized code of conduct for local councils. He emphasized the importance of municipal leaders coming together to learn from experts and engage directly with provincial leaders, while also benefitting from hearing diverse perspectives from their peers. President Bressey described Spring MLC as an important forum for ensuring Alberta’s municipalities are well informed, collaborative, and heard by the provincial government.

Spring MLC is as much about connection as it is about content for many participants. The event provided municipal leaders with opportunities to build and renew professional relationships, compare experiences across regions, and learn from one another in a collaborative, solutions oriented environment. Those informal conversations – between sessions, over meals, and during networking breaks – remain a defining strength of the event’s format.

The 2026 Spring MLC was the largest ever hosted by ABmunis and underscored the power of collaboration. Alberta Municipalities continues to support informed decision making, shared learning, and collective advocacy through high-impact, member-focused events like this.

Alberta Municipalities is delighted to be hosting this year's Public Risk Conference at the Courtyard Marriott West Edmonton on June 1 and 2, 2026. The conference is considered a must-attend event for municipal risk managers, insurance administrators, and CAOs.
