Recreation Programmer
The Town of Ponoka is currently recruiting for a permanent full-time (1.0 FTE) Recreation Programmer in the Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department.
Position Summary
The Recreation Programmer reports to the Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities, and will take daily direction from the Recreation Coordinator. This position will support the work of the Town of Ponoka’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department, working closely with the other Town Departments as needed.
The Recreation Programmer is responsible for the development, delivery, and promotion of recreation, leisure, and sport programs and activities to foster a healthy lifestyle for all community residents. This role involves planning, organizing, and executing programs for diverse age groups, and ensuring effective communication and marketing of these programs.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Recreational Program Management
- Develop, implement and facilitate a variety of sport, recreation, and leisure programs for community members of all ages.
- Ensure programs are safe, inclusive, and aligned with the organization’s vision.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and gather feedback for continuous improvement.
- Oversee the training and development of program staff.
- Communicate and promote program details to users and community members.
- Partner with community organizations to organize programming.
- Undertake other duties as required
Marketing and Advertising
- Create promotional materials including flyers, social media content, and bi-annual program guides.
- Develop and maintain a strong online presence to attract program participation.
Participant Engagement
- Build and maintain positive relationships with program participants, volunteers, and community partners.
- Liaise with users to provide support and education on proper techniques and equipment or facility use.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate records of program attendance, budgets, and evaluations.
- Assist the Recreation Coordinator with administrative tasks related to programming.
- Prepare financial and program reports for activities and programs.
- Ensure proper storage, management, and supply of equipment used for programming activities.
- Track data on activities and community programs.
Customer Service Support
- Cooperate with customer service staff in recreation facilities and provide support as needed.
- Provide coverage of the Recreation Reception Desk function as required.
Minimum Requirements
Education
Post-secondary education in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Business or related field.
Experience
Minimum of 1-2 years of Recreation related experience including Programming experience.
Other
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
- Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract
- Standard First Aid, CPR, AED
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
Competencies
Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of community recreation programs, and services.
- Proficient with scheduling software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Skills:
- Community development, strategic planning and team management skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to set goals and work priorities, manage diverse projects and duties simultaneously, while meeting timelines.
- Strong time management skills are essential.
- Ability to work independently with confidential and sensitive matters.
- Professional demeanour with excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal).

Working Conditions
- Varying levels of physical effort, including moderate lifting (up to 25 kg), sitting, walking, standing, pushing and pulling, reaching, and carrying. Repetitive motion of office tasks.

Recruitment

- 7.5 hours per day, days, evenings and weekends
- Salary range: $29.05 - $33.68 per hour
