Update from the legislature – November 4, 2026
The second session of the thirty-first legislature resumed last week. The session is scheduled to run until December 3.
Justice Statutes Amendment Act Introduced
On October 27 Bill 33, the Justice Statutes Amendment Act was introduced. The legislation proposes to prohibit provincial bodies, including municipalities from using personal characteristics in decisions related to hiring, promotion and training, as defined in the Alberta Human Rights Act.
The legislation would also prohibit municipalities from requiring an employee to participate in or complete education or training that seeks to dictate, the range of acceptable or unacceptable opinions or beliefs on any political, historical, social or cultural issue or on a matter of conscience.
Provincial Electoral Boundaries
On November 2 the Independent advisory Panel on Electoral Boundaries submitted a report to the Legislative Assembly with proposed new electoral boundaries for the next provincial election. The panel, which was appointed on June 9 in response to Government Motion 37 and Bill 32, was tasked with creating new boundaries after the government rejected the report submitted by the Electoral Boundaries Commission. If approved by the legislature, the boundaries will be used for the next provincial general election which is scheduled for October 19, 2027.
