Update from the Legislature – May 7, 2025

The Legislature continued sitting this week, with the spring session scheduled to conclude May 15. Debate on Bill 50 during Committee of the Whole is expected to begin on May 7. Alberta Municipalities has advocated for amendments to be brought forward during debate at committee stage and will monitor developments over the coming days.

We have also released our draft preliminary analysis of Bill 54, the Election Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, which was introduced last week. While it is primarily aimed at the rules regarding provincial elections and elected officials, we have identified a number of changes that will affect municipalities, as detailed in our analysis document.
