Update from the Legislature – May 14, 2025
The spring session will conclude this week, with the Legislative Assembly on track to pass 19 government bills.
Bill 50 was debated during Committee of the Whole on May 7 and 12. Several amendments were proposed – many consistent with ABmunis’ recommendations – but only the sole government amendment, regarding proposed changes to natural person powers, was approved. The bill is expected to pass the Legislature on May 14 and receive Royal Assent by this weekend. ABmunis will continue to follow-up on concerns we flagged in the bill as regulations and other implementation tools are developed.
Nathan Cooper, the MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, resigned the Speakership effective May 12 and indicated he plans to resign his seat in early June to become Alberta’s Senior Representative in Washington D.C. His resignation will increase the number of vacant seats to three, with byelections also needing to be in Edmonton-Strathcona and Edmonton-Ellerslie.
Calgary-Hays MLA and former Minister Ric McIver was elected to replace Speaker Cooper on May 13. Speaker McIver is the 15th Speaker in Alberta’s history.
Cardston-Siksika MLA and Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow was appointed the interim Minister of Municipal Affairs on May 13. A cabinet shuffle is expected to happen soon, perhaps as early as Friday, May 16.
