Update from the legislature – April 22, 2026
The legislature resumed sitting this week, with a one-week constituency break scheduled for next week. The spring legislative session is scheduled to conclude by May 14.
Provincial Electoral Boundaries
The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission’s Final Report was tabled by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on March 26, 2026, with recommendations for new boundaries for the next provincial general election.
On April 16 the Government House Leader introduced Government motion 37, which creates a Select Special Committee on Electoral Boundaries. Chaired by Leduc-Beaumont MLA Brandon Lunty, the all-party committee is tasked with working with an independent advisory council to create a new proposal that factors in a larger number of constituencies. The committee must submit a report to the Legislative Assembly no later than November 2, 2026.
The motion also calls on the Government to introduce a Bill to amend the Electoral Boundaries Commission Act to provide for 91 electoral divisions, up from the 89 currently provided for in the legislation and the 87 currently in place.
