Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system is changing how recycling is funded in communities across the province, and Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) wants to hear what that change looks like on the ground.
We know the transition to EPR has not been without challenges. Timelines have been tight, and implementation has looked different from one community to the next. As the system continues to take shape, we want to hear about the positive impacts municipalities and residents are beginning to see.
We are looking for real examples that demonstrate what EPR is meaning for your community, including:
- Are residents seeing savings, such as reduced or eliminated recycling fees?
- If savings are not being passed directly to residents, how is your municipality using funding that previously supported recycling services?
- Has that funding been redirected or reinvested in other municipal priorities, services, or infrastructure?
- Has EPR helped create additional capacity within your municipal budget or address other local pressures?
- Are there other positive outcomes from EPR that are worth highlighting?
The benefits will not look the same everywhere. For some communities, EPR may mean savings on residents’ utility bills. For others, it may free up municipal dollars that can be directed toward other priorities. Whatever EPR’s impact looks like in your community, we want to hear about it.
Sharing these stories will help ABmunis better understand the local impacts of EPR and provide concrete examples that can support our ongoing advocacy on behalf of municipalities.
Have an EPR success story to share, or questions about the program? Send a short description of what EPR has meant for your municipality, including any savings or examples of how funding has been redirected or reinvested, to our Advocacy [at] abmunis.ca (Advocacy Team).
