Report recommends improvements to municipal grant programs
Alberta Municipalities engaged with members throughout 2024 on an initiative to develop recommendations to enhance the effectiveness and equity of Government of Alberta municipal grant programs.
The final report with recommendations is now available on our website. We have discussed the report and its findings with officials from the Government of Alberta, including in Red Tape Reduction and at a meeting last week between President Tyler Gandam and Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver.
At a high level, recommendations include:
- Improving flexibility in grant funding
- Aligning grant timelines with municipal cycles
- Streamlining and standardizing grant processes
- Designing grants with proportionality
- Optimizing eligibility matching
- One grant management platform
- Enhancing transparency in fund distribution
- Fostering regional partnerships
- Establishing continuous feedback mechanisms.
We look forward to continuing to engage with the provincial government on this issue to advance our members’ interests.
