New federal funding opportunity: BCSF Local Impact Stream

The federal government introduced the Build Communities Strong Fund in Budget 2026, creating a new opportunity for municipalities to advance local infrastructure priorities. The fund includes three streams: Provincial and Territorial, Direct Delivery, and Community. Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) has advocated for increased, flexible infrastructure funding that reflects the diverse needs of municipalities across Alberta rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. ABmunis continues to advocate for changes to the BCSF program and for programs more similar to CCBF administration. While we continue these efforts, ABmunis sees the Local Impact Stream as being a sound commitment to municipal infrastructure.  

Delivered by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), the Local Impact Stream will invest $176.6 million over four years, beginning in 2026–27, in community infrastructure projects across the Prairie provinces. The funding will support public infrastructure investments that strengthen community resilience, accommodate growth, and advance regional economic development. 

Municipalities may request between $250,000 and $1 million through the Local Impact Stream to create or improve community infrastructure. Eligible projects may include expansions, renovations, retrofits, climate adaptation measures, and the replacement of existing infrastructure. 

ABmunis encourages eligible municipalities to apply for the intake of this funding in October 2026 for upcoming, shovel ready projects.
