Minister’s council on infrastructure funding

Last week, the Honourable Dan Williams, Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced that he is launching a council to explore policy options to expand fiscal tools to fund municipal infrastructure. Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) is awaiting more information about how the council will be structured and its scope, but we look forward to participating on the council in this important endeavour.  

ABmunis has consistently highlighted the growing pressure on municipal property taxes, and this council is a positive step toward identifying additional solutions to fund the replacement and growth of local infrastructure.  

The Minister’s council will complement an existing infrastructure financing project that is being led by BILD Alberta in partnership with ABmunis, City of Calgary, City of Edmonton, and the Rural Municipalities of Alberta. The project kicked off in May 2026 with a focus on financing of infrastructure for new housing growth.  

Recommendations from both the BILD Alberta-led project and the Minister’s council are expected by late fall 2026. ABmunis will continue to monitor this work closely and share updates as more information becomes available.
