LGFF operating allocations now available for 2026

In early 2025, Municipal Affairs engaged Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) and RMA for input on the design of a new allocation formula for the LGFF Operating program. Last week, the Government of Alberta released the listing of each municipality’s 2026 funding allocation under the Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) Operating program.  

For the fourth straight year, the total funding has been set at $60 million, and each municipality’s allocation remains unchanged from their 2023 funding amount. Our understanding is that Municipal Affairs plans to release a new allocation formula sometime this year that will take effect for the 2027 funding year. 

We have encouraged Municipal Affairs’ administration to release the LGFF Operating allocations earlier in 2027 so that municipalities have time to adjust their 2027 budget accordingly before setting their tax rates.
