International Women's Day 2022: Break the bias

March 8 is International Women’s Day (IWD). This year’s theme is “Break the Bias”.

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

Alberta Municipalities supports IWD and initiatives that enable equality for women. We are actively participating in the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ current initiative, Canadian Women in Local Leadership (CanWILL) with a representative on both the Project Advisory Group and a Gender Based Violence Technical Working Group. CanWILL’s primary objectives are:
•    Strengthening the capacity of women, particularly diverse women, to run for elected office;
•    Creating a more conducive context for women leaders to thrive;
•    Enhancing the capacity of municipal stakeholders to address gender-based violence and harassment; and
•    Mobilizing knowledge and sharing best practices across municipalities.

We encourage all of our members to celebrate IWD in their communities. Look for events in your area being held online, and maybe even in-person this year. Or, host your own event! Check out the International Women’s Day website for resources and more information about the theme and IWD events that will be taking place around the world.
