A Guide for Elected Officials: Privacy Laws
The Access to Information Act and Protection of Privacy Act officially replaced the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act in June 2025. As an elected official, there are responsibilities under each Act that focus on transparency in governance, responsible handling of personal information, timely responses to requests for municipal records, and upholding confidentiality.
In partnership with Reynolds Mirth Richards & Farmer LLP, ABmunis has developed the Alberta Privacy Legislation: Guide for Elected Officials to help elected officials gain a basic understanding of the new Access to Information Act and Protection of Privacy Act.
A separate, more comprehensive guide will be made available to municipal administrators in early December.
