FireSmart webinar series on wildfire resilience
Emergency management is a strategic priority for Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis), and we rely on strong partnerships with organizations such as FireSmart Alberta to help municipalities build capacity across all phases of emergency management. Through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and practical training opportunities, initiatives such as the FireSmart Webinar Series help communities strengthen their ability to prepare for and adapt to Alberta's evolving wildfire risks. This upcoming webinar series aligns with ABmunis’ Policing, Justice, and Emergency Management Committee’s work to ensure municipalities have the resources they need to effectively prevent, mitigate, respond to, and recover from wildfires.
Wildfire resilience is shaped long before a wildfire reaches a community. The way communities are planned, homes are designed and constructed, landscapes are managed, risk is assessed, and policies and standards are developed all influence how communities withstand wildfire.
This fall, FireSmart Alberta is bringing together researchers, practitioners and industry experts for a four-part, online webinar series focused on practical approaches to integrating wildfire resilience into Alberta’s built environment. The series will examine wildfire resilience from the individual structure and Home Ignition Zone through to neighbourhood planning, resilient development, construction practices, insurance, municipal policy, standards, and funding.
The sessions include:
- September 16 – Planning for Wildfire Resilience: From the Home Ignition Zone to the Community
- September 24 – Wildfire Risk, Insurance and the Case for Resilient Development
- October 13 – Designing and Building for Wildfire Resilience: Construction, Materials and Landscaping
- October 29 – Creating the Conditions for Resilience: Planning, Policy, Standards and Funding
