Everything you need to know for Convention

The 2026 Alberta Municipalities Convention and Trade Show is almost here. We wanted to take a moment to make sure attendees have all the information they need before they arrive.  

Before Convention 

Registered elected officials from Regular Members of Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) will also be receiving an email on September 16 from Data on the Spot (DOTS). This email will include your voting credentials. Voting credentials are personalized to each elected official and grant access to vote only on items based on eligibility. For example, when you vote for an Alberta Municipalities Board of Directors position, you will only see and be eligible to vote on the position in your electoral zone. There is a test vote that is open now. Please check your credentials and cast a vote in the test question as soon as possible, so that we can be sure you received your credentials. 

Code of Conduct 

Familiarize yourself with our Event Code of Conduct. By attending an ABmunis event, you agree to abide by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct includes rules relating to harassment and abuse and guidelines on reporting violations. Code of Conduct violation reports are taken seriously by ABmunis, and the Association is committed to taking steps to ensure the safety of all Event Participants. ABmunis Employees will provide support to any Event Participant who reports a Code of Conduct violation. 

Registration 

We are pleased to announce that we will be opening our registration on Tuesday, September 22, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. This will allow attendees to pick up their badge ahead of Wednesday morning’s Opening Ceremonies.  

To encourage delegates to come check-in early, everyone who visits on Tuesday will be entered to win a $1000 gift card, handed out at the end of Convention. So, drop your bag at your hotel and head on over to Registration at the Edmonton Convention Centre’s Assembly Foyer. Please note, you will only be permitted to pick up your own name badge. 

Event App 

You will receive an email detailing instructions to download this year’s event app. The app will be your go-to for all Convention related information. Explore a full agenda with session descriptions, get a preview of our 2026 exhibitors, and connect with your fellow delegates. Download the event app in advance and plan your Convention. Reminder, sessions are first come, first served. Adding a session to your agenda does not guarantee you a spot in that session. 

Grand Prize 

This year’s grand prize is courtesy of our sponsor, YEG Edmonton International Airport. You could win two round trip flights to any of Porter Airline’s sun destinations non-stop from Edmonton including Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Las Vegas or Phoenix. We will give the prize away at the end of Convention on Friday, September 25, and you have to be there to win. 

Approved Materials 

ABmunis does not permit unauthorized materials to be left on any tables at the Edmonton Convention Centre, other than Board candidate materials or ABmunis-developed content. We reserve the right to remove anything we deem inappropriate. 

2026 Resolutions Process 

The resolutions process is an important component of our annual Convention. It is your municipality’s opportunity to give us direction on what issues we invest our time and resources to advocate on your behalf.   

Each resolution is brought forward by a member municipality who deems the issue to be important and seeks approval from the membership for ABmunis to take action. Each elected official of a Regular Member municipality who is registered for Convention has the right to vote on each resolution.  

Tips for Participating in the Resolutions Session 

We highly encourage you and other attending members of your council to read the 2026 Resolutions Book before you head to Edmonton. If you have questions about a resolution issue, ask your CAO or contact the municipality that has sponsored the resolution. You will find contact details at the bottom of each resolution in the Resolutions Book. 

If a representative of your municipality plans to speak for or against a resolution at Convention, please consider the following tips: 

• The timer starts as soon as you introduce yourself at the microphone and will automatically mute after 90 seconds. 

• Sometimes members run out of time because they use part of their time to extend thanks or make remarks unrelated to the resolution. We encourage you to practice your address including everything you want to say within 90 seconds. 

• Read our guide on the Resolutions Voting Process so you understand how debate and voting will work. 

If you are thinking about making an amendment to the active clause of a resolution (“It is therefore resolved that...”), we strongly encourage members to discuss them with the moving municipality and notify resolutions [at] abmunis.ca (ABmunis) prior to Convention. Please avoid amendments that deal with grammar, tone, or sentence structure. Amendments should be considered only when it materially changes the intent or direction given to ABmunis.   

Make sure you have received your email from Data on the Spot with your voting credentials. Please take the time to test logging in before September 23. This is explained in the Resolutions Book.
