We’ve called this special session in light of a cumulative legislative trend that shifts authority from locally elected councils to the provincial government. ABmunis' concern is not any single provincial decision in isolation, nor any municipality in isolation.
Bills 18, 20, 50, 51 and 28 collectively increase provincial involvement in:
- municipal funding relationships
- elections and councillor accountability
- council procedures
- land-use planning
- taxation and revenue tools
- utilities
- public assets
- local service delivery.
These bills result in less room for municipalities to respond to local circumstances and less direct accountability between locally elected councils and the residents who elected them.
These decisions effect all our members. We want to hear from all of you so we can shape and deliver a response that represents your needs and concerns.
