Applications Open: Drought and Flood Protection Program

The Drought and Flood Protection Program is a multi-year grant program to help municipalities and Indigenous communities improve their long-term resilience to drought and floods events. The program supports projects such as berms, flood walls, retention ponds, and drought-proofing infrastructure that enhance community resilience.

Since its launch, it has funded 28 projects across Alberta. Some of the projects include work in Wood Buffalo, Siksika Nation, Medicine Hat, and Pincher Creek to strengthen water systems, protect critical facilities, and prepare for extreme weather events.

This fall, $25 million in funding is available through the Drought and Flood Protection Program. This is part of a five-year, $125 million investment to help municipalities and Indigenous communities build vital infrastructure that protects people, homes, and local economies.

Eligible applicants include municipalities, improvement districts, special areas, Métis Settlements, First Nations, and new this year, regional service commissions and Tribal Councils. The deadline for applications is December 1, 2025.

ABmunis has long advocated for increased infrastructure funding to help communities prepare for and respond to extreme weather. Members looking for guidance can find a wealth of drought preparedness materials on the ABmunis Drought Preparedness page and additional risk management resources to support local resilience planning.
