ADVOCACY WIN: New flood maps released
The Government of Alberta has released nearly 250 kilometres of new and updated flood maps for Hinton, Red Deer County and Markerville, Stettler, Vegreville, and Pine Creek. These maps identify areas at risk of flooding from rivers, streams, and lakes, helping communities prepare for emergencies, guide safe development, and support informed local decision-making.
ABmunis has long advocated for expanded flood mapping across the province, including through a 2020 resolution. We recognize how valuable this data is to our members, not only for community safety, but also for reducing insurance costs. In fact, members of our insurance team recently travelled to London to help secure better insurance rates for municipalities.
Since ABmunis’ 2020 advocacy efforts, the province has published maps for 65 municipalities and five First Nations, with a goal of completing over 3,000 kilometres by 2028. The new maps can be explored online through Alberta’s Flood Awareness Map Application.
