ABmunis provides input on Councillor Accountability Framework

Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) has submitted recommendations to Municipal Affairs to support the development of Alberta's new Councillor Accountability Framework, which was established through Bill 28: Municipal Affairs and Housing Statutes Amendment Act. 

The recommendations reflect feedback we received from members to a draft submission we shared following our participation in Ministry-led consultations in July. ABmunis' submission is guided by the principles of municipal autonomy, accountability, transparency, and procedural fairness. The submission aims to support the development of a practical and effective framework that promotes ethical and respectful conduct among elected officials while strengthening good municipal governance. 

Establishing Ongoing Municipal Input 

Recognizing the complexity of implementing a new accountability framework, ABmunis is recommending the creation of a stakeholder working group, that includes municipal associations and administrative organizations. The proposed working group would help develop guidance and resources to support implementation, monitor how the framework operates in practice, identify emerging issues and best practices, and provide ongoing advice to inform future improvements. 

ABmunis looks forward to continuing to work with Municipal Affairs and municipal partners to help ensure the Councillor Accountability Framework supports strong, accountable, and effective local governance across Alberta.
