ABmunis engages province on new police funding model
The provincial government released the new police funding model in December 2025. The model, which comes into effect this year, represents a significant increase in policing costs for impacted communities.
Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) Board Members and staff met with Deputy Minister Justin Krikler and other Public Safety and Emergency Services (PSES) staff on April 13, 2026. The topics of discussion included the new model, and sharing our concerns about the impacts of rising costs on already-strained municipal budgets. The Deputy Minister indicated that he is willing to engage further on this topic. The Policing, Enforcement, and Emergency Management Committee will develop a submission for his consideration at their next meeting on May 9, 2026.
If you have any questions about the new police funding model, please direct them to our kelly [at] abmunis.ca (subject: PSES%20New%20Police%20Funding%20Model) (Senior Policy Analyst) by April 30, 2026. As PSES has not yet shared a comprehensive list of costs and estimates for all affected municipalities, ABmunis would very much appreciate receiving a copy of your municipality’s invoice and estimates to support a more in-depth analysis. These materials can be submitted alongside your questions to the contact above.
