Job Description

The City of Camrose is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and dedicated individual to fill the full-time permanent position of Fire and Life Safety Educator. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Fire and Life Safety Educator is responsible for providing public fire safety education to the City of Camrose community. 

FUNCTIONS/DUTIES (but not limited to): 

  • Coordinate all school programs (Risk Watch, Learn not to Burn, Getting to Know Fire, fire station school/organization tours).
  • Communicate with the general public on Fire Safety Education, including presentations, fire extinguisher selection/training and fire safety demonstrations.
  • Work with the rural community on Farm Safety Planning and the Fire Smart Program.
  • Administer and coordinate the Health and Safety Program for the Camrose Fire Department.
  • Coordinate ongoing health and safety education for the Fire Department, deliver First Aid and WHMIS training, and stay current on evolving health and safety standards.
  • Lead internal incident investigations, maintain records of incidents and WCB claims, and analyze safety trends in collaboration with the Health and Safety Advisor.
  • Serve as a certified Safety Auditor for internal and external program audits.
  • Assist with fire inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with the Alberta Fire Code and Safety Codes Act; prepare enforcement documentation and maintain accurate inspection records.
  • Support fire protection planning for major events, review building plans, and help with minor equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Respond to fire/rescue calls, participate in fire suppression and rescue operations, and assist with firefighter training throughout the year.
  • All other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of firefighting experience (NFPA 1001-2 preferred), with at least two (2) years in a supervisory role (NFPA 1021-1 preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principal elements of the AMHSA Health and Safety Program.
  • Ability to prepare and present effective Fire and Safety education programs.
  • Ability to work with large numbers of people in all levels of the organization.
  • Alberta Safety Codes Officer – Fire Discipline Level B1/C1 preferred.
  • Intermediate First Aid and CPR certification required; higher-level certification considered an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of fire safety, fire prevention, investigation and inspection practices.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and communicate effectively with the public.
  • Knowledge of the principals and practices involved in training personnel and NFPA 1041 Level 1 preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License required; Class 3 License with Q endorsement preferred.

HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a Tuesday night training session.
