The newly formed Taza Township Corp. is seeking its first Executive Director, a pivotal leader who will build upon a foundation of strong community spirit and a shared progressive vision. This is a unique opportunity to lead a new vibrant community within the Tsuut’ina Nation, guiding it towards even greater shared equity, prosperity, and innovation. The ideal candidate will value collaboration, embrace strategic planning, and have a proven track record operating in a local government setting.
Reporting to a highly engaged and collaborative Taza Township Board (Governing Body), the Executive Director will be responsible for planning, administering, directing, and evaluating all civic operations, including oversight of essential public services such as water, sewer, streets, public safety, community development, parks and recreation, and administrative functions. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring efficient and effective service delivery, providing expert policy guidance and financial oversight to the Tsuut’ina Nation and the Taza Developer, and implementing its policy decisions and laws with precision and foresight.
The Executive Director will be instrumental in translating the Township’s vision into tangible outcomes across critical areas. Operational excellence will be paramount, necessitating a thorough review of departmental budgets to enhance efficiency and a commitment to continuous improvement in all public services.
More than anything, the Executive Director is Taza Township’s foremost ambassador, building and nurturing critical relationships with a vast network of external stakeholders and maintaining consistent and transparent communication to advance the collective goals of the Tsuut’ina Nation and Taza Development Corp. This individual is visible, accessible and intentional in their community engagement, ensuring the Executive Director’s office is connected to the pulse of Taza.
Position Overview
The Executive Director is the senior administrator responsible for the overall management of the Township’s operations and administration. The ED provides strategic leadership, implements Board identified priorities, ensures the efficient delivery of services, and supports sustainable community growth. This role requires a strong balance of operational management, financial oversight, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Governance & Board Support
- Serve as the principal advisor to Township Board, providing sound policy recommendations and professional guidance.
- Implement Board decisions, advise on legislation and strategic priorities.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and policy options to support informed decision-making.
Leadership & Administration
- Establish and lead a corporate structure including the management staff and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and service excellence.
- Oversee all operations, ensuring effective and efficient delivery of services.
- Develop and maintain clear policies, procedures, and organizational structures.
Financial & Strategic Management
- Establish and operate the assessment and property tax collection program in accordance with approved legislation.
- Prepare and manage the Township’s annual budget in alignment with the Board’s goals.
- Monitor revenues, expenditures, and capital projects to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Lead long-term planning for infrastructure, land use, and community development.
Community Relations
- Act as the primary liaison between the Township, residents, businesses, and other levels of government/governments.
- Promote open, transparent, and effective communication with the public.
- Represent the Township at meetings, regional initiatives, and community events.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation.
- Identify and manage organizational risks, including financial, legal, and operational matters.
- Oversee the negotiation and administration of contracts, agreements, and partnerships.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Public Administration, Business Administration, Political Science, or a related field (graduate degree preferred).
- Progressive experience in municipal administration, governance, or senior management, preferably in a small-town or rural context.
- Strong understanding of First Nation legislation, governance practices, and financial management.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to accountability, integrity, and community service.
