Accounting Operations Supervisor
PURPOSE:
This position contributes to providing excellent customer service to internal departments and ratepayers and ensures that the financial and long-term planning processes reflect best practices at the municipal level. As Accounting Operations Supervisor, your core focus areas will be internal controls, process improvement, cash management/investments, and all related portfolio controllership functions and duties.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR:
- Assist with overseeing the implementation and review of accounting financial systems and processes, accounting controls, policies and procedures;
- Evaluating and monitoring internal controls to ensure appropriate cash handling, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory management, and assist management procedures are in place;
- Attending Council and committee meetings and making presentations as required;
- Responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of the annual audited financial statements, liaising with external auditors, preparing financial reports and statistics for internal stakeholders, outside agencies, regulatory bodies and other levels of government, and ensuring the integrity of information;
- Providing acting and backup support to the Director of Finance and each other (Accounting Operations Supervisor and Financial Planning Supervisor).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A strong leader with a minimum of five years of experience in financial and accounting functions in local government, preferably in a supervisory capacity, including unionized staff;
- Professional Accounting Designation (CPA preferred);
- Experience in public sector accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis;
- Solid knowledge and understanding of financial and accounting requirements, including Public Sector Accounting Board;
- Proven organizational, analytical, problem-solving and time management skills;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective and productive relationships with management, employees, other local governments, the public, and other stakeholders;
- Strong consultative, facilitation, consensus-building, conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation skills;
- Advanced skills and knowledge of applicable financial and accounting software;
- Experience with Vadim or iCity is an asset;
- Experience with CaseWare is an asset;
- Municipal experience would be an asset;
- Experience in responsibility for the quality and content of financial data, reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination;
- Ability to translate financial concepts to departmental Managers/Directors and to effectively collaborate with colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds;
- Technology savvy with experience using Microsoft products; knowledge of accounting and reporting software;
- Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders;
- Strong project management, organizational, and analytical skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple technically complex and challenging projects;
- Experience in Risk Management and/or Procurement would be an asset;
- Candidates with equivalent education and experience may be considered.
Compensation & Benefits:
The City of Brooks offers a competitive salary and benefits package for this position. The regular working hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The successful applicant will also receive a free family membership to the JBS Canada Centre during the term of employment.
