Members are encouraged to book their hotel accommodations as soon as possible. With a number of shows happening at Rogers Place during our event dates, hotels are booking fast. Blocks with availability (as of July 7) are listed below. Given the downtown occupancy currently available, ABmunis may not be able to add any more rooms to the existing available blocks once they are full. 

While we are not offering shuttle service, taxi chits will be available for guests staying at the Chateau Lacombe, Sandman Signature Downtown, Delta Centre Suites, and Comfort Inn, should you need assistance getting to and from Convention activities. Taxi chits are only valid for trips from the hotel to Convention venues, including evening hospitality suites. Taxi chits are NOT valid for personal use, including to meetings outside of the Convention agenda, or for rides to/from the airport.

Please note, each hotel can and may have their own individual cancellation policies. It is the municipalities responsibility to understand and agree to these policies. Alberta Municipalities is unable to assist with canceling hotel rooms and does not assume any financial responsibility once rooms have been booked by a municipality.

Effective Meetings ($425 plus GST)

Effective meetings are essential to good governance. Council meetings are where priorities are debated, decisions are made, and accountability to the public is demonstrated. This practical course equips municipal elected officials with the tools and knowledge needed to participate effectively in meetings and support fair, efficient and productive decision-making.

Participants will explore the role of meetings in municipal governance, understand how meeting rules and procedures support council’s work, and strengthen practical skills related to motions, debate, conduct and decision-making. The course examines the distinct responsibilities of the chair and council members and provides strategies to navigate common meeting challenges while maintaining professionalism and public confidence.

Through practical examples, discussion and application exercises, elected officials will strengthen their ability to contribute meaningfully at the council table and support meetings that are focused, respectful and effective.

Service Delivery ($425 plus GST)

Municipal service delivery shapes how residents experience local government and their communities. This course equips elected officials with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed strategic decisions about the services their municipality provides.

Participants will explore council’s role in setting service levels, understanding different delivery models and aligning funding decisions with community priorities and long-term sustainability. This course examines a range of service delivery approaches helping councils assess options based on cost, risk and community impact.

Through practical examples and discussion, elected officials will strengthen their ability to oversee service delivery, monitor performance and communicate decisions clearly.

Strategic Planning ($425 plus GST)

Leadership is at the heart of an elected official’s role, with council members responsible for shaping the long-term goals and priorities of their municipality. This interactive course equips elected officials with the tools and knowledge to lead effectively by separating day-to-day operations from big-picture planning.  

Participants will learn the critical role of strategic planning in ensuring the long-term success and resilience of their municipality. They will explore how councils can collaborate to set realistic goals, understand the key elements of a strategic plan, and gain practical skills in the planning process.

Legal Seminar ($229 plus GST)

Hosted by Reynolds Mirth Richards and Farmer LLP

Liability doesn't have to be intimidating. Good governance, sound decision-making processes, and a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities are the strongest tools elected officials have to manage risk. This session demystifies liability and focuses on practical strategies that help councils make confident decisions, protect public trust, and reduce exposure to legal challenges while effectively serving their communities.

This practical session will help elected officials understand the legal and governance landscape surrounding municipal liability. Drawing on real-world municipal examples and recent legal developments, participants will explore the difference between municipal and personal liability, the role of indemnification and insurance, and the circumstances that can expose elected officials to legal, financial, or reputational consequences.

Topics will include conflicts of interest and pecuniary interest, improper use of influence, misuse of municipal assets, confidentiality obligations, defamation, decision-making risks, risks of not meeting defined levels of service and council's role in exercising due diligence. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of where liability risks arise, how to avoid common pitfalls, and the governance practices that help protect both the municipality and those elected to serve it.

Please note, the Legal Seminar is only a half day session from 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm. Light lunch will be provided.

The following guidelines apply to all facets of ABmunis’ Events including sponsor hosted events, workshops, plenaries, political meetings and social gatherings where Event Participants are in attendance. By attending an ABmunis’ Event, an Event Participant agrees to abide by these guidelines.

Behaviours that are not acceptable at ABmunis’ Events include:

1. Harassment or intimidation based on personal characteristics such as gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, age, religion or any other characteristic protected under the Alberta Human Rights Act,
2. Sexual harassment or intimidation, including unwelcome sexual attention, stalking (physical or virtual), or unsolicited sexualized language or physical contact,
3. Shouting down or the use of abusive, offensive, or threatening language towards Event Participants or Employees,  
4. Wearing clothing that may be offensive toward other Event Participants or that displays vulgar language or images, and
5. Retaliation for making a complaint under this Policy or participating in the complaints process.

If an Event Participant experiences or witnesses these behaviours, they are to report it to:

1. the Investigating Officer,
2. any ABmunis Employee or Board Member, who will connect that Event Participant with the Investigating Officer, or
3. codeofconduct [at] abmunis.ca (codeofconduct[at]abmunis[dot]ca), an email monitored by the Investigating Officer.

Code of Conduct violation reports are taken seriously by ABmunis, and the Association is committed to taking steps to ensure the safety of all Event Participants. ABmunis Employees will provide support to any Event Participant who reports a Code of Conduct violation, which support may include use of a private room to make the report, the ability to have a designated support person present during any interviews, and a chaperone to prevent contact with the individual who allegedly committed the violation. 

The Investigating Officer has the authority to remove any Event Participant as an interim protective measure subject to a Code of Conduct violation complaint from the ABmunis’ Event, with or without a refund, while an investigation of that complaint is ongoing

The Alberta Municipalities Partners’ Program is available for those members who are bringing a partner along with them to Edmonton. Registration costs $100 and will provide your partner with the following access:

• A ticket to the Host City Reception
• Access to select downtown Attractions
