Alberta Municipalities Meeting on Provincial Policing

Event Summary

Alberta Municipalities is hosting a webinar for members on Wednesday, January 19 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., to review and discuss the Alberta Provincial Police Service (APPS) that is being proposed by the Alberta provincial government. This webinar will prepare members for the upcoming provincial meetings with the Department of Justice and Solicitor General (JSG), ensuring that members are aware of the details from the PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) Transition Report and what information gaps exist. We will also ensure members are equipped with questions that JSG must eventually answer with regards to an APPS.

JSG administration recently met with the Alberta Municipalities Board to provide a “dry run” through their presentation. It caused many concerns, which we will discuss in more detail next week at our webinar.

Also, to prepare for this session, we contracted Global Public Affairs to provide a detailed analysis of the APPS transition report developed by PWC. Global will present their findings during the webinar, and we will then use the remaining time to connect with members regarding the outstanding questions and concerns.

Here is a synopsis and analysis of the PWC Transition Report to the APPS and preliminary questions for your review prior to the webinar. Based on what we hear during the webinar and JSG sessions, Alberta Municipalities intends to draft a Request for Decision on an official position on policing in Alberta. This position development and ratification will be the significant focus at our Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus in Edmonton (March 9 and 10).
