NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Government of Alberta assign demerit points to drivers in those instances where the driver would receive a fine under current regulation for all occupants of the vehicle not properly wearing a restraint device/seatbelt.

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Government of Alberta make provisions for suspension of the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) of any new driver found in violation of the restraining device/seatbelt legislation.

Whereas Clauses

WHEREAS seatbelts have been proven to be a very effective safety measure for drivers and passengers of vehicles;

WHEREAS failure to wear a restraint device/seatbelt has resulted in unnecessary fatalities; and

WHEREAS existing fines have failed to achieve full compliance with some drivers to ensure that all occupants of a motor vehicle, including children and infants, are properly secured.
