Job Description

Village of Acme, AB

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO)

The Village of Acme is a welcoming rural based community of just over 650 residents located within an hour of the cities of Calgary, Red Deer, and the Town of Drumheller in central Alberta. Acme is an important service and community hub for the surrounding area, with an economy supported by agriculture, agri-business, transportation, logistics, manufacturing, energy-related activity, retail, and local services. Renewed manufacturing investment is creating additional opportunity for the community.

Following the retirement of its current Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Village is seeking a confident, grounded and community-minded municipal leader to serve as its next CAO.

Reporting to the Mayor and four members of Council, the CAO is Acme’s senior administrative leader, responsible for translating Council’s direction into effective administration, reliable municipal services, and practical results.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a municipal professional who enjoys working in a lean organization, is comfortable moving between strategic priorities and day-to-day matters, and understands the realities of serving a small close-knit community.

The successful candidate will bring:

  • Ideally five or more years of progressive leadership experience in local government, preferably within a small or mid-sized municipality.

  • A strong understanding of Council–administration relationships, including experience preparing reports, recommendations, bylaws, policies, budgets, and strategic plans.

  • Demonstrated experience with municipal finance, operating and capital budgets, financial planning, and resource allocation.

  • Knowledge of Alberta’s municipal legislative and regulatory environment, particularly the MGA.

  • Experience or sound working knowledge of infrastructure, public works, utilities, planning and development, asset management, and emergency management.

  • A proven ability to lead, mentor and develop employees, establish expectations, and foster accountability.

  • The judgement, communication skills, and relationship-building ability to work effectively with elected officials and a diverse community.

  • Post-secondary education in public administration, business, municipal management, finance, planning, engineering, or a related discipline. CLGM, CMML or related municipal credentials are considered assets.

This is an opportunity to provide direct and meaningful leadership in a supportive community, while working with Council to shape Acme’s future and strengthen the services and organization that support its residents and businesses.

A competitive compensation and pension package will be provided to the successful candidate. Specifics will be discussed during the recruitment process.
