Members encouraged to lend voice to advocacy on caribou range planning

AUMA supports the recent request by Alberta Environment and Parks asking the federal government for more time and greater support to understand the socioeconomic impacts of caribou range planning. This is a win for Alberta municipalities and AUMA’s advocacy efforts. AUMA members endorsed a resolution calling on the Government of Alberta to complete an overall socioeconomic impact assessment in 2016.

On your behalf, AUMA has urged both governments to reconsider their policy directions on species at risk and caribou planning since 2016. In our letter to both the federal and Alberta governments, we emphasized the importance of conducting comprehensive socioeconomic impact assessments and any species at risk recovery strategies must be based on a scientific assessment of all causes.

To continue building on our momentum, we encourage you to reach out to Honourable Catherine McKenna, the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and your local Members of Parliament, urging them that the federal government must play a greater role in supporting the province to understand the true impact of caribou range plans in Alberta communities. You can email ec.ministre-minister.ec [at] canada.ca (subject: Woodland%20Caribou%20) (Minister McKenna) and find your MP’s contact information.
